Muthurajawela, a 6,230-hectare wetland, is one of Sri Lanka’s top 12 priority wetlands, rich in biodiversity with nearly 200 plant species, 102 bird species, and a variety of fish, reptiles, mammals, and butterflies. Once prime rice fields, the area transformed into a unique coastal ecosystem after Dutch canal construction caused saltwater intrusion.
