The Byzantine Churches Tour of Athens

We walk in Plaka and surrounding streets, visiting beautiful Byzantine churches of the 11th century. We admire their elegance, get to know the most important characteristics of Byzantine architecture and the role that these churches played in our local history. We learn about architecture, masonry, and Byzantine Symbols. We also stop to see modern buildings that were built in neo-byzantine style. We sketch Byzantine Athens' town planning. We speak about eminent visitors to Byzantine Athens and eccentric incidents from their lives. We learn about important events of the Byzantine times. Optionally, we visit the Metropolis Heirloom Room to see Byzantine items used in Orthodox Churches. We can visit the Greek Catacombs The ticket to the heirloom Room costs 3 euros and is not included in the price of the tour. Last but not least, you are welcome to light a candle in the churches for blessing. The cost for the candle is 0,50euro.

Byzantine churches tour was absolutely incredible. The itinerary is perfectly organized, allowing you to discover hidden gems and truly appreciate their beauty and history without feeling rushed. Not only did I learn about history, architecture, and Byzantine art, but also about Orthodox Christianity and the unique way the Greek people live and experience their faith. Nice tour. Guide is very knowledgeable and flexible. Learned a lot. We missed the tour as the official location and guide’s meeting point differed but were able to rebook one day later. Off note: Byzantine churches are not cool in temperature like European cathedral churches.
