Cape Town Slave Legacy Tour
Tour Overview
We begin at the corner of Adderley and Wale Street, at the Slave Lodge, where the Dutch East India Company housed the people it owned — and end at the Company's Garden, planted in 1652 to provision passing ships and dug largely by the people held five minutes down the road.
The route:
- Church Square & the Groote Kerk (the auction ground, memorial stones, and the church whose congregation left enslaved attendants waiting outside)
- The Slave Church on Long Street, the Sendinggestig, built for those the other churches wouldn't seat
- The Town Hall & the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest colonial building in the country.
Told through storytelling and character rather than a list of dates.
