We had a lovely tour with Caroll. We saw the city hall, had a walk through the Analakely market, where we also tried some sugar cane juice. Then we started walking uphill to the Queen’s palace. It’s really quite a long walk and only uphill, so you should be pretty fit and make sure to bring enough water. But I’m sure it’s also possible to grab a taxi and drive up. On the way we had some nice viewpoints and also went to the “Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Andohalo”. At the queen's palace we took a local guide, who gave us some history about the place and Antananarivo. He was very passionate and new many many dates and years, way to many to remember ???? We liked this option, as one can be sure that your guide receives your money and not some big agency (who also organize trips to the Queens palace). Caroll was also very interested in our culture and habits, which made the conversation very interesting and one also gets an insight into local everyday life. Regarding the meeting point, it is NOT the place marked in the map (when clicking on the link). Unfortunately we got lost and were wondering for 1h to try to get to this place - which isn’t possible. Rather it is infront at the “Antananarivo train station” which isn’t an actual station. This was the only downside, as we also didn’t have any data to communicate. Nevertheless it was solved and we were lucky that Caroll was able to meet us later! It’s a great way to get at least a small insight in this extremely busy and loud city!
At the meeting place I was greeted by my guide and his manager, and asked whether I'd mind having some English language students along, to practise their English proficiency. I was happy to do this, and it added interest to the tour. Their skills needed brushing up, and the guide intervened when needed. His English I would score at 8.5 out of 10. The tour went through the city centre fairly quickly, and soon began the LONG climb up SO many stairs to the Queen's Palace. Participants should know this is a long and vigorous climb. At the Palace (closed on Tuesdays), the guide waited outside while a Palace guide showed me through this impressive building. At the end of the Palace tour, the original guide was waiting for me, and walked me back all the way to my hotel, where he farewelled me, having ensured my safe return to my accommodation. He was extremely polite, and his concern for my welfare was appreciated.
All good, thanks to the guide for her good work in particular.
