Palermo Beyond the Mafia: A Regeneration Tour
Tour Overview
A walking tour through Palermo’s Kalsa and Vucciria districts, where striking social and urban transformations reveal the city’s ongoing efforts in regeneration and resistance to mafia influence.
We begin at the Addiopizzo Committee headquarters, a former mafia property turned into a cultural hub, a vibrant space that now serves young people, families, students, and travelers from across the globe. From there, we walk to Piazza Magione, a restored green space that hosts street education initiatives for youth in the neighborhood. Then we visit the workshop of a local artisan, and we take a break in the small square facing the Antica Focacceria San Francesco, whose former owner was one of the first in Palermo to publicly denounce mafia extortion.
Leaving the Kalsa, we enter the area around the old Vucciria market, an evocative mix of street art, crumbling buildings, and newly restored façades. We end our tour at Maravigghia, a hospitality hub and much more, where we’ll share a glass of wine and taste local specialties with the passionate people behind this unique place.

Our guide, Silvia, introduced us to a side of the city that’s different from the usual tourist routes. Through this themed tour, we got more than we could have hoped for. We highly recommend it to everyone!
Really cannot recommend this tour experience enough! It’s really well thought out and the little snack and wine at the end is the cherry on top! 10/10! The tour also supports the anti-mafia cause, which is very important! After the tour, I felt more connected to the city and its causes.
A guide with impeccable French who gave us a high-calibre insight into urban and political issues, and a committed organisation that understands that empowerment comes through education and solidarity. It was a powerful, enriching and intense experience. Thank you, and long live the struggle !
I had a great time. Perfect addition to the No-Mafia! Tour in the morning. Focuses on La Kalsa, the community work as important strategy in addioPizzos work and gives a great insight. The wine tasting in the end is the cherry on top! ;)
Very informative tour with a visit to a local artist in the formerly "dangerous" district of Palermo, we were able to ask him lots of questions and got a great insight into the way of life. We also found it really great that the organization does a lot of youth work and help. Finally, we were given a few small specialties to try. All in all, a great tour. Thank you!
