The Heart and Soul of Berlin: Between
Neighborhood Culture and the Spree
Tour Overview
Sonnenallee reflects Berlin’s constant transformation like no other street. Once abruptly divided by the Berlin Wall, this former border neighborhood has now evolved into a vibrant, multicultural melting pot.
While Arab cafés and startups define the streetscape, the “shorter end” of the avenue still evokes the city’s famously literary East German past. At the former border crossing, the route leads directly onto the Berlin Wall Trail. The heavily guarded “death strip” once ran along the green Heidekampgraben here. Today, a peaceful green corridor connects the districts of Neukölln and Treptow. Information panels and memorials along the way serve as a poignant reminder of the fates shaped by the division of Germany as you walk or run.
The path eventually leads directly into the sprawling Treptower Park, centered around the monumental Soviet Memorial. As the largest burial site of its kind in Germany, over 7,000 soldiers are laid to rest here. The vast, awe-inspiring complex is dominated by a twelve-meter-tall bronze statue of a soldier saving a child. The nearby Spree promenade offers a striking contrast.
